Alumbra is a Latina women-led collective of artists, educators, and community organizers, with members spread between the US and Mexico. We collaborate with youth in marginalized neighborhoods to create responsive, site-specific artistic light installations that transform underused community spaces into safe, creative places, bringing neighbors together at night.
Alumbra was founded in 2020 to restore community ties during the pandemic, which kept everyone confined to their homes. We recognized the power of open-air public spaces to strengthen cohesion when designed and built with community members. Additionally, we saw the need for nighttime destinations to achieve this in cities that are alive 24/7.
We have partnered with youth from marginalized communities in Mexico and the US, collaborating with organizations such as Vamos Juntos, Fleisher, Puentes de Luz, Imaginalco, and Mural Arts.
Alumbra has been awarded the prestigious Velocity Grant and Added Velocity Grants for our innovative approach. Our work in Philadelphia, especially the Sunset Corridor installation, has garnered significant media attention for its neighborhood impact and the collaborative process. Jane Golden, founder and director of Mural Arts, praised Alumbra’s work as compelling and aesthetically engaging, highlighting its power to empower and inspire young minds.
